Hi guys,
I am writing with some more advice for studying English. I hope it is useful to you.
Going abroad and studying English in an English speaking country is one of the easiest ways to study the language, but why is this exactly? Is it possible to re-create a similar environment whilst in Japan and reap large benefits? I believe yes!
1. When living abroad you can and have to speak English everyday.
Everything you do you must do in English; ordering from a restaurant, buying something, etc. How can you speak this much English in Japan? It’s easy. Just speak to yourself. It doesn’t matter so much if you don’t actually say the words, it is still great practice. For example:
I’m hungry. I want to eat dinner. I don’t know what to eat. Hmm I ate pizza last night. I want to eat Japanese food tonight. Hmm I will go to a Japanese restaurant. ETC.
You can talk and talk and talk to yourself in English whenever you have time. It can be serious things as well, it is all good practice. You will get faster and faster; saying what you know and your grammar will both eventually become like second nature. The more you do this the faster you will improve. However, you must only use English, don’t mix Japanese in!
What about when you have to speak English overseas, like ordering at a restaurant?
Simple, when you do something like this in Japanese, think of what you would say in English. If you aren’t sure, then learn. You will soon find many things you don’t know how to say and you can learn them.
2. When living abroad, you hear and can read lots of English.
All around you people are speaking English. The TV is English. The Radio is English. All the signs and advertisements are in English!
This is harder to recreate in Japan, but you can watch English TV. You can listen to English Radio. You can read English anytime. If you immerse yourself in the language you will improve rapidly.
Is it this simple though? If you follow steps 1 and 2 will you improve like living abroad? This depends on how much effort you put in. If you really try and speak to yourself, try to use perfect pronunciation, always try and push what you can say, express things that are difficult, then yes it is possible. If you really listen to the radio or the TV, trying hard to understand what they say, then yes it is possible. If you read and try really hard to understand sentences that are confusing for you and look up words you don’t know, then yes you can improve. You see, you don’t improve so much when you are saying or reading English that is easy for you. You really improve when you struggle to understand or say something, but you do your best anyway. As the next time you will do a bit better and so on.
I have a favorite analogy of mine about learning language. Learning language is like boiling water. If once every 3 minutes you apply 10 seconds of heat to a pot of water, it will slowly get warmer. Eventually it might boil, but it will take a long while. However if you just turn on the heat to high, in a short time the water will boil. Once it has boiled, the heat can be turned down low and the water will keep boiling. So if you want to get good at English, turn on the heat! Learn new things everyday! Immerse yourself! This is what it takes to improve quickly. When you have improved a lot it doesn’t take so much effort to maintain your level.
However, perhaps most importantly of all, remember that your English ability has no connection to your value as a human being. It is a hobby or a goal of yours, don’t be so hard on yourself when you struggle with it. This is just part of the process. Good luck.
